Open Educational Materials of the sustainability-focused Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience implemented in the Masterโs Degree in Safety and Disaster Studies, as part of the Sociological and Socio-psychological Perspectives on Risk and Disasterย Course, at MUL.
The challenge asked students to investigate real-world risk and disaster issues from social-science and applied linguistics perspectives, focusing on how language and communication shape perceptions of threats such as natural hazards, technological accidents, health crises, and climate change. Working in groups, the objective was to apply critical discourse analysis and qualitative text analysis to risk-related communication, identifying framing strategies, assumptions, biases, and power relations while developing systems thinking, critical thinking, and risk literacy to better understand the social and communicative dimensions of sustainability challenges.
