The pilot implementation of the ENVIHEI project at the University of LeΓ³n (ULE) has successfully concluded its first semester, marking an important milestone in the integration of sustainability-focused Project-Based Learning (PBL) into higher education curricula.
Launched at the beginning of the academic term, the pilot brought real-world sustainability challenges into the classroom, enabling students to actively apply their knowledge through collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. Lecturers who previously participated in the ENVIHEI Professional Development Program (PDP) implemented PBL methodologies across several degree programs, including Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Engineering, Computer Engineering, and International Marketing.

A key element of the pilot was the strong connection with industry, which enriched the learning experience and reinforced the practical relevance of sustainability competences. Students engaged with several companies, including:
π΄ MMR Bikes, which shared insights into sustainable product design and manufacturing (find out more here);
π¬οΈ Jupiter Bach, which introduced real-life sustainability strategies in the renewable energy sector (find out more here); and
π Antolin, through an initiative organized by the FaCyLβAutomotive Cluster (find out more here).
These experiences allowed students to work on authentic industry-driven challenges while developing transversal and green skills.
Alongside the learning activities, pre- and post-implementation surveys were conducted to assess the development of studentsβ green competences and the impact of PBL methodologies on learning outcomes.
With the first pilot phase now completed at ULE, the ENVIHEI consortium will build on the lessons learned to refine future implementations and continue advancing innovative, sustainability-oriented higher education across Europe.
