On May 9, 2025, ENVIHEI held its fifth Professional Development Program Workshop titled “Environmental Sustainability and GreenComp”. Led by Aida Guerra and Dan Jiang, with collaboration of Helle Nielsen, an expert in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and action research, with experience in capacity building support academics in integrating SEA in their teaching and learning practices. The session brought together educators across Europe and beyond to deepen their understanding of how to integrate environmental sustainability and green competences into their teaching practice.
This hands-on, student-centered workshop explored the GreenComp framework — the European Commission’s Sustainability Competence Framework — which outlines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to foster sustainable development in educational contexts. Through interactive lectures, exercises, and the integration of student perspectives, participants gained practical insights into aligning their course content with the principles of sustainability.
The workshop covered:
🌿 Key sustainability frameworks and how they apply to higher education.
🌿 Strategies for contextualizing green competences within different disciplines.
🌿 How to develop effective learning outcomes that promote sustainability knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
🌿 Student voices and their expectations around environmental responsibility in university curricula.
Participants also engaged in reflection and design tasks to tailor these insights to their own academic contexts, guided by examples from Strategic Environmental Assessment and the Engineering for One Planet initiative.
Workshop 5 continued to build on the momentum of the ENVIHEI Professional Development Program, supporting lecturers in transforming their curricula for a greener future in higher education.
